December birdwatching
There are of the order of 4,000 ducks present on the Coombe Hill Canal Reserve (with a high proportion of Pintail, numbers reaching international significance). There is extensive flooding and a shallow lake in front of the Grundon Hide which is still accessible. There are also close to 1,000 geese in the Severn Vale, mostly Canada and GreyLag, but also Egyptian Geese at Coombe Hill, and various hybrids at Ashleworth Reserve.
Winter thrushes are arriving slowly. Numbers will increase with the colder weather. There are large mixed flocks of finches on the Cotswolds in the Cold Aston / Hazelton area.
